A mix inspired by the 1997 movie "Event Horizon"
Processing my feelings on a terrible movie through bleeps and bloops.
Happy Monday, you!
I hope you had a fun, refreshing weekend wherever you were. It wasn’t that hard to do here in Denver; it’s rained every day for what seems likes weeks, with more coming up on the forecast. I also got to check out a beautiful show in Boulder and interview the headliner, who has a new album out. My dispatch from the show will be in the next newsletter.
Today, I’ve got a treat for you. It’s a mix I made after watching one of the silliest, goriest, most perplexing movies of the 90s…
Event Horizon is a sci-fi horror movie that came out in 1997 and was directed by the dude that made Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Alien Vs. Predator. I didn’t know any of this going in; I just wanted to watch a movie Sunday morning and my fiancée recommended this one. I was enticed by the cast, which includes a young Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill, the dude from Jurassic Park.
This was clearly going to be a stupid movie, but I was astounded by how stupid it really was. Terrible performances, nauseating editing and special effects, and gory glimpses at what I’ve heard multiple people call a “blood orgy” (including myself). The dialogue is also awful, sprawling with “what the hell is going on here?” filler, overdubbing and some ridiculous screaming (especially from Neill). It’s one those artifacts they stopped making after 9/11.
After watching it, I decided to cleanse our space by recording a mix of ambient and techno music. It ended up being directly inspired by Event Horizon, starting with alien, swirling synths and going into hyperdrive with fast, stormy techno. A couple of artists are on here twice, probably because they fit the eerie, deep-space dread of the movie so well. There are several new tracks from this year, too!
Give a listen for yourself below (or directly on Soundcloud):
I wish I could say that this mix is an alternative to watching Event Horizon, but honestly, I can’t keep you from it. It was a wild ride.
What do you think of the mix? Did you watch Event Horizon? Did it traumatize you? What other good bad movies should I watch?
Lemme know. New post coming later this week!
